using images in timer

I am using the timer in my game to display images over and over again.  I've noticed that after the image has been displayed 1000 times the click event stops working and after 2000 times the images stops displaying.  The images are being placed on top of each other over and over again, should they be cleared each time I put in a new image, if so how do you clear an image, and should I be using the timer at all for this?
